Susie was caught in France at the outbreak of the war as she was staying
with our aunt in Britanny, the widow of a French Subject. When the Germans
over ran that part of France Susie being a British Subject was interned in various places. Being
a plucky person she escaped and lived in occupied France as French girl
doing various jobs till she was caught and sent to a prison where she spent
several months in solitary confinement. She was repatriated eventually
through Spain on an exchange of prisoners scheme. Our parents, living in Jerusalem
at the time the time just had news of her through the Red Cross. So there
was nothing very dramatic about the story except that it must have been very
stressful. But that is war
