I might just add that I went to a "state" boarding school (run by the former London County Council) just a couple of miles upstream from Pinmill. At the time (the 1950s) we certainly thought we were unique. When Margaret Thatcher disbanded London County (because it kept electing left-wing governments) the school was kept going for a while by what was known as the Inner London Education Authority, but was eventually (in best Thatcherian tradition) was handed over to the private sector and is now, I understand, a school for girls.
