This American reader is grateful for the original query. In the U.S., "hard-boiled" means 10 minutes or more, eaten (usually cold) in the hand. We don't usually eat them in the shell "soft-boiled" - soft enough to require a spoon. If the egg is not hard, then it's scrambled or "sunny side up" (broken into a pan with the yolk kept whole, then flipped over to semi-harden the yolk and make the white crispy).
I've always wondered about British egg-eating habits, but never had the nerve to ask.
