Tennant Creek, about 500k north of Alice Springs in central Australia has a yacht (squadron, I think - not club - what's the difference?) whose members sail regularly on a stretch of water just outside of town called Mary Ann damn - a tiny piece of water in anyone's book; and Alice Springs itself has a yacht club and sailed a boat (heavily sponsored by, among others, Qantas) in a recent Sydney to Hobart. So, yes, you can sail in some of the most unlikely places.
