Ed,
You raise some interesting observations.
5. In Thailand Acetylene lamps are still used and recently I got a very sophisticated and complex variation with little wheels to adjust the amount of water that drops onto the CARBIDE which then generates the acetylene as whell as valves to control the gas output to the flame to regulate its size. Too much gas and not enough air makes the flame smokey. The very white light from these lamps is blindingly bright
8. Mushrooms for breakfast are delicious. The large flat ones, rubbed over with a damp cloth to remove any dirt then sliced into big chunks and cooked with butter makes a dish fit for kings.
You can add some garlic sliced as well but the non Thais might not like this.
Serve on toast with either poached or fried eggs.
9. Flex. This refers to the flexible electric wire made up of multiple strands of copper inside the insulation. It is called electric flex to distinguish it from electric cable which had solid copper inside the insulation.
Flex is used for portable, light loads and cable for the main house wiring.
19. Caster sugar. More crushed than ordinary sugar but not as fine as icing sugar. If you crush lump sugar, you will see the size of caster sugar.
