John was re-lacing the sail, as well as re-whipping the reef points and doing a bit of re-stitching the day the Amazons came to camp on the island in SA. Details escape me and I'm not handy to the books, but that should provide some clarification.

On the subject of the boom, referred to in an earlier post, in SD they wound the sail around the boom and had the jaws hold it in place when bringing Swallow up to Rio since the broken mast was too short to handle even a fully reefed sail.
