Ransome and Shute certainly shared a love of sailing.I recall reading somewhere Shute referring to his sailing experiences in the thirties.
In a least two of Shute's novels "Trustee in the Toolroom" and "What Happened to the Corbetts" major parts of the action are set on small sailing craft. Like Ransome he also contributed introductions to sailing books: notably the Smeetons' "Twice [?] is Enough".
