WH is one of my favourit Ransome books, I think I like the way that the relationship between the Callums and the others develops. But remembering my own experiences of winter where about 45 mins in the snow was enough to send me running in to get warm always made me suspect the characters cavalier attitude to the conditions. Particularly where Nancy goes through the iced over tarn and barely bats an eye. Such conditions in the mountains are deadly but hypothermia/exposure is not even considered. Perhaps following his Russian experiances AR considered a UK winter rather tame.
