In spite of the advantage of limited liability status which is conferred by being a limited company, there is a lot to be said for being an "unincorporated association" like your local sailing club. You take out insurance to take care of the liability issue and can have a properly elected committee, regional reps on the committee, AND a confidential membership list. The Companies Act was not designed with societies like Tars in mind and unless Tars intends to become a major commercial organisation I don't see the point of its company status. The associated problems of transparency, accountability, etc. are some of the reasons why I am hesitant about joining.
