Adam, you have resurrected a memory from 40 years ago. Forgive me if I am vague, but this is not something I read, merely an illustration used by one of my literature professors.
It concerned the tale of two families traveling by automobile, one driving north from Miami, Florida, and the other south from Chicago, Illinois. The author used chance happenings and coincidences to create a scenario which made it inevitable that those two cars would crash head-on midway through their journies.
