Since PD is strictly a mind exercise, the Swallows (mostly Titty, I infer) would have had more opportunity and reason to add (irrelevant?) details that don't play any particular role in the story. Accepting that premise might explain why the patch is so prominent in PD, and much less so in the others. I'm not near my books now, it might be interesting to see whether the patch shows up in Winter Holiday ("Shove your port legs down . . . ", p. 197 in the Godine edition, according to my illustrations database).
