An oil stove was a cylindrical metal object, usually about 3 feet high and 1 foot diameter.
Most of it was just a perforated steel sheet, to let the heat out, but at the bottom was a paraffin (kerosene) tank with a wick on top. You lit the wick, and the stove gave out some feeble warmth. There was often a small window of red glass through which you could see the flame. It made the effect slightly more cheerful.
