We are about half way through the reading the opus to our 5 year old (and occasionally
the 3.5 year old) and it is indeed wonderful to watch them discover the stories. Purists
may dislike this but what really got us started was the Movie Swallows and Amazons which
I first showed them when they were 3.5 and 2. That Christmas they got a homemad Amazon
complete with pirate flag. They were Nancy and Peggy Pirate for months and I think the
movie got played 2-3 times a day (when they could get away with it). In fact the 2 year
old thought her name was Peggy for quite some time. Coot Club and Big Six are also big
favourites about our home - they compete quite well with the Disney videos!!!
All in all a very rewarding experience - start them young and read as much as you can to your
kids using quality materials! And Ransome's books are of the very highest quality!!!
