I agree with Jock about Potter, the Bridge is low and the height of the tide can determine whether a motor cruiser can pass through. A sailing yacht of the Teasel type should be OK if the mast is fully lowered. There is also an accentuated flow at the bridge due to the funnelling of water through the narrow gap. It can also funnel the wind as well! I have had trouble rowing against an ebb in the bridge mouth.
In my view it makes sense to go with the flow in a sailing boat, and as the Teasel had a very long journey to Yarmouth I can understand the need for an early start. It might be disarmingly simple, but they could always stop and wait if early, but as Sir Garnett found, if you are late you are stuck!

Last Easter (2000) at Potter the excessive rain stopped many boats going up through the bridge with the result that Horsey and Hickling were as quiet as I have seen them at that time of year.
