Thanks Mike, I expect the Marlinspike hitch will prove to be the answer but I am still curious about where the name Handspike Hitch came from and also the reasons behind the choice of those particular knots.
In answer to your second comment, yes I have and also my Siamese opposite number the Double Mathew Walker! Talking of hitches, I have often wondered if Nancy was aware of the Highwayman's Hitch as a handy way of slipping moorings quietly during the Amazon:s neferious activities - and if so, might she not have christened it the Pirate Hitch?
