Writing in 1939 (The First Mate's Log p. 32) Robin Collingwood observed that when he and the young Arthur Ransome camped on Peel Island in the early years of the century it belonged to the estate of the Duke of Buccleuch. By the late 1930's it belonged to the National Trust (the original 'land conservation agency') and camping was no longer allowed.
