My recollection from Brogan's book is that at the beginning of WW2 the Ransomes were living in Suffolk until the house they were in was requisitioned by the Services, and then they returned to the Lakes to live a very quiet life. I think there is a lot of truth in Peter R's comment, but this was also the period when AR was creatively working on PM, which I always enjoy re-reading for the "bringing to life" of the GA who up till then seemed a shadowy villainess, and of course the climax involving the GA's disappearance and the final outcome.
