I share the affection for PM, its secretiveness is somehow very evocative of the way imagination illuminates the landscape in AR's work.
SW is also a favourite, the action comes from the exploration not from external events.
I do understand, however, why people say WD is the best written, it is the most like a conventional literary novel with development of character and all that jazz.
As for WH, well I'm a back country ski nut so it's a straight description of paradise. Pity AR didn't draw on his Baltic experience and have them making their own skis. After all, Nansen did not cross Greenland on skates but Harry Griffin in "Coniston Tigers" makes it clear that skating was the Lakeland winter sport in the 20's
