Having contributed my two cents worth on my favourite (WH) I would place SW at the bottom of my list. The map-making that preoccupied John made him, to my mind, sullen, boring and unattractive and the brooding presence of the Swallows' father just (but only just) out of the picture gives the book a completely different atmosphere from all of the others. They had a good time, made new friends, but somehow the magic is not there.

In my childhood I had a second candidate, Missee Lee, but to my surprise found that my son counted it as being among the three best. You just never know!
