If there is a common thread amongst U.S. Ransome enthusiasts (at least the ones that join TARS and
TARSUS) it is that they had never met anybody else in the U.S. who had heard of or read the S&A books
until they stumbled across TARS. Even now we have a bit less than 160 members across all of the U.S.
so that's not too surprising. What surprised me as a child was that the books in the library (and later,
in other libraries I investigated) were always well-worn and regularly checked out but somehow never by
anybody I knew. Of course I didn't go about with an albatross stopping one in three and demanding to know
if they'd read Ransome -- but there are times I almost wish I had done.
