Children's language abounds in absolutes: "You never let me go/do/wear..." "You always say that" "Everybody else....." "Nobody else...."
The "For ever" motif seems to me to be one of those aspects of childhood that AR uses when he wants to remind us that his characters really are children, not young adults. Their enthusiasm for grog, ice cream and chocolate are others that spring to mind.
Today, the same phrase crops up frequently in children's e-mails and text messages, as in "Best m8s 4eva" "Luv U 4eva"
