I am about 20 miles north of the border which at its closest to me is the middle of Lake Ontario and just the place to spot a catboat or skiff. I would agree with Robert's description. Swallow and Amazon would be described as catboats, single mast set forward with one sail which could be triangular or quadrilateral. A skiff is a light rowing boat.
