I have just downloaded the film clip mentioned by Ian
E-N. I have seen the colour version starring Virginia McKenna and
Ronald Fraser, but this B&W one is new to me. My clip ends suddenly
after the shot of Nancy touching up the skull and crossbones with
Peggy looking on approvingly. I was surprised to see Titty wearing
a life jacket and appalled to hear the commentater referring to the
*lovable* Walker family. Whatever next. Gruff old Captain Flint with
a heart of gold? Solid practical John and cheeky young Roger?
I have often doubted the wisdom of trying to bring a famous book to
the screen. It can never hope to satisfy everyone's idea of how the
characters should appear. In the colour version, I think the choice of
Ronald Fraser was a mistake - didn't strike me as being a bit like
Captain Flint. And am I alone in wondering why the director made
Roger seem mentally retarded? Anyone else get this impression?
