Prue,
If Roger or John had entered the RN through HMS Britannia at Dartmouth, they would have entered as Boy Cadets at either 13 or 15 years of age and would have been Midshipmen by the age of 17. These young men graduated as Sub Lieutenants at about 18 and were posted to large ships or destroyers (John's ambition as expressed by Roger). They then served as the most junior offices on these ships and when WW11 arrived these men were promoted rapidly to command Corvettes and Frigates.
