You surprise me. I admit it's not a subject I've thought about for years, but I seem to remember a vague feeling of outrage when jam when into tins as a "wartime economy measure".
Jam jars certainly existed. My mother made home-made jam, and I doubt she went out and bought brand-new empty jars. But she sealed them with cellophane, so possibly there were no screw tops.
