It looks to me, Art, as though the artist simply redrew the original map of the Lake, in its original orientation (in the front end-paper,) and then superimposed on it, at the end that was going to be the front cover, his redrawing of the original map of the Island (facing the start of Ch.1,) in it's original orientation.
