When I was a boy growing up the the dry, hot parts of South Africa we used to have coolers made of wooden frames, covered inside and out with chicken mesh, the spaces between being filled with clinkers (freely available from any railway station at the time) and the whole contraption was kept damp by watering it twice a day or so. It really worked a treat, it did. But of course in England, even in summer, I'm sure meat would have kept very well for a couple of days at least.
