The small Electrolux fridge was round New Zealand too. Silent, as it did not have a compressor but required a heat sources eg LPG (bottled gas) or kerosene. Now you're keeping cool with gas! Also 12 volt DC power I think, so could be run off car batteries (but not for long, due to the power required?). And good for keeping beer cold when camping (though not for our family); but Brits would want something to warm their beer up in!

Electrolux: a Swedish brand. The Electrolux vacuum cleaner was made in New Zealand, the only one avaliable locally in in the days of import licensing. Hence the expression “luxing” which meant the same as “hoovering” in England!

Refrigeration by large commercial ammonia plants goes back to the 19th century; the first refrigerated shipment of meat in 1882 by the ship “Dunedin” from Port Chalmers, New Zealand to Britain. And from the Argentine too.
