There are a great many societies in the UK which are registered as charities, and allowed to reclaim tax on the whole of their subscription income - provided that the subscribers each sign a declaration that they wish this to happen, and they pay enough individual tax to cover the amount reclaimed. Probably the best-known example is the National Trust.
(By the way, the exhibition last year was in Edinburgh, not Manchester.)
