When we went camping in the sixties in the far north of NZ(no electricity, self dug long-drop toilets, walk six miles to the nearest source of clean fresh water, drive 25 miles over dusty, rain-scoured roads to the nearest general store), my father took with us a tiny kerosine-driven fridge to make life easier for my mother. It only had room for a few blocks of butter, eggs and three days worth of fresh milk but it was such an improvement over evaporated milk and dry crackers even we children appreciated it.
