In past times in England, a pantry was used to store linen, crckery or silverwear and for especially the latter, was the butler's province in larger houses. It comes from paneterie(Old French) baker.
A larder, on the other hand was a room for storage of food. It's name also descends from Old French - lardier - lard which needs a cool storage area.
