John,
I've used boiled linseed oil on the spars for my 12-foot lugsail dinghy for three years. It certainly is easy to work with. I've not had it go dark or black as someone suggested may happen over time.
More recently I tried the Dutch Sikkens Oil (exterior grade)because it had been used on the hull of another clinker dinghy I once owned. It was fine, pleasant to use but more expensive. It looks good, adds a bit of tone and contains some synthetic additives that are said to improve protection of the wood.
