We have been sanding all the old peely varnish from the spars of our dingy, ready for re-coating. Captn Flint gave John plenty of linseed oil to soak into the new mast for Swallow. Is this still the best way to treat raw timber spars, or should modern sailors (with fibre glass hulls) use modern yacht varnish? (My normal method has been to use yacht varnish, but with the first coats very thin indeed to soak into the wood - is this recommended by others?)
