John is just a typical eldest son. Prue - with respect, you never were one! I don't see him as "priggish"; he is just concerned to try to live up to the standard set by his (mainly absent on Naval service) father and to some extent, certainly where Roger is concerned, he feels that he must step into the shoes of his absent father. Having been an eldest son in such a situation, I find him totally convincing. When "Daddy" does appear, almost as a "deus ex machina" with his pierhead jump in We Did'nt Mean to Go to Sea, all readers, I think, find him a very satisfactory character.
