I'm not sure about John's being a prig, Prue -- doesn't priggishness, denote some degree of wilfulness in one's attitudes? a conscious choice about them? I don't think John was making a choice at all, really, conscious or otherwise. He was just reflecting the attitudes that his father had apparently passed on to him -- quite normal in a growing lad. In that respect, he was certainly "trying to live up to 'daddy.'" But I wouldn't expect any real priggishness to appear, if at all, until he was well into his teens.
