My only evidence for this is that he does not seem to have sailed much, if at all, singlehanded. But if he was, he would have kept mum about it because some interfering person might have tried to stop him sailing.

The descriptions of buoyage in "We didn't Mean to Go to Sea" and "Secret Water" do not help, because the lateral buoyage system was amended after these books were published; the descriptions are correct for the date.
