I don't have any basis for suggesting that Arthur Ransome was colour blind, beyond the "green" Siamese flag, but it offers an explanation, of sorts.

He may perhaps have come to prefer using real places, rather than combining elements of actual places to make imaginary ones, as the series went on. I can remember being used to identifying the places in Secret Water,(my sister and I had them pretty well "ticked and bashed", after many bicycle and boat expeditions!) and being bitterly disappointed that I could not do so on an Ordnance Survey map of the Lake District; might he have had similar complaints from young readers?
