Both the Christian and Curwen names are from the Isle of Man, which is visible from the top of Kanchenjunga I saw it myself. There has always been some people moving between the Cumberland coast and the Isle of Man and lots of trade.
In Castletown, the former capital of the Isle of Man, there is a museum which contains a small schooner called the Peggy built in 1791 which sailed from the Isle of Man and somehow got into Windermere to participate in a regatta. She was walled up in a house in Castletown and is still in very good shape.
