Read you'r posting re Dick's pigeon alarm. It appears that if a pigeon lifts the gate the cross wire will lift the darning needle ONLY if the bend in the needle is forward of the crosswire. My illustration of the mechanism is rather small (Red Fox ed. 1993)so such a detail is difficult to discern. The bend in the needle is there in order to position the contact portion of the needle in close proximity to the spring contacts...not to act as hook. I have great faith in Dick's analytical ability but not so certain about Nancy's.
