Sorry Mike, the bend is correct, it isn't a hook but rather a way of making
the needle closer to the gate so that the gate will push the needle earlier
when the pidgeon moves in. A side profile would make all clear.

So when thw gate moves forward you can see it would push the needle
earlier than if the needle pointed straight.
