I think you've both missed the point here. Roger knew that he was to guard the boat. He had also been well-socialised in the family custom of treating all adults as "natives," not to be trusted until proven trustworthy. (And a very good policy, too.) He was therefore quite determined not to give away any secrets to strangers -- after all, who was to know if they weren't somehow in league with the Amazons, and would tell them what the Swallows were up to if they found anything out? So he very properly pretended not to know anything.

Read the book again and I think it will be clear enough.
