When I lived in Prague, in the days before the velvet revolution, I was told that the greeting "Ahoj" originated with what my friend called "the tramps movement". I belive that he meant ramblers or hikers rather than vagabonds.
His explanation was that groups passing would hail each other "like ships at sea". So I suspect "Ahoj" is borrowed from English.
