There was some discussion here a few months ago about the origin and use of the word "Ahoy". I had a holiday last month in Central Europe, where I found that in Czech and Slovak, an informal greeting is "Ahoj!", roughly equivalent to "Hello", and pronounced, of course, "Ahoy".
My phrasebook also says that in Hungarian, the word "Tars" means "companion".
