That is one of the good things about Ransome's books, too. He wrote for kids obviously. Especially for bright kids. But there was enough in them to make them a good read for an adult as well.
It is sort of like an old Warner Brothers cartoon. The kids laugh at Bugs Bunny's antics while the parents appreciate the puns and sly cultural references.
