AFAIR, Nancy explains later (and I paraphrase) "We called the first Homer, and then hit the books to look for more Greek poets". And anyway, the reason is obvious to the adult reader.
And so should be to Mrs Blackett. I know she is portrayed as a rather in trow to her manipulative daughter, but I don't think AR meant her to be seen as ignorant. Her comment more reflects her long having given up trying to rationalise all Nancy's actions.
But what exactly do they say to you?
