The canon is so packed with good lines its impossible to pick a favourite! Pehaps we could nominate one from each book, or chapter! Giving the thread a slight twist how about favourite captions to illustrations: Forlorn hope, Night time when its inky black... Rogers view of the waterspout and his indignant justification. Nancy semaphoring with mumps. They're all so good!
One of the most memorable lines from contemporary literature for me is Conan Doyle... 'Mr. Holmes, they were the footprints of a gigantic hound!' Sent a shiver up my spine the first time I read that!
