It's ben mentioned here a few time before, but Andrew, what you need is a little book titled In The Footsteps of The Swallows and Amazons, by Claire Kendall-Price.
Once you appreciate that, unlike in the Broads and East Coast Books, Ransome took elements of the Lake District and reassembled them to make his fictional map, the fun becomes discovering them, and this book is the key. Plenty of guidance, good maps and the right Ransome spirit of fun and adventure.
Best place to stay if you can is Bank Ground Farm, on the banks of Coniston, and the original Holly Howe. Tack up the field yourselves!
