I remember a scene in Cold Comfort Farm (also 1930s?) where a lay preacher is describing the fate of sinners with words along the lines of " You know when you get a little burn you put soothing butter on it … there will be no butter in Hell"; [Gasps of horror from the congregation]. So, presumably, it was a common remedy at that time.

What other remedies does AR mention? In Peter Duck Bill said that the tooth he lost when he was gagged would prevent reumatics.

Any other examples TARBoarders can think of?
