My guess - and it can only be a guess (based on experience from dinghey sailing days) - is that it they were doing a practise capsize of sorts (I don't know if Amazon would have been any easier to capsize than Swallow - the description of Swallow sounds almost uncapsizeable - I remember trying to capsize my old Heron as a kid and actually having to get out of the boat and pull her over - it was almost impossible!!!) I assume that Captain Flint - like the Death and Glories - were unaware they were practising.

Anyone any better ideas?
