In my humble and ever so uninformed opinion *sic* the GA was introduced as some sort of catalyst. But, as all characters may do, she made an increasingly vital role for herself, culminating in P&M where the entire plot depends on her.
I wonder whether AR decided not to write more Lake stories because the GA warned him off?
